Axle spacers set wheel spacing and protect the axle and bearing shoulders from the wear that comes with repeated wheel changes. Getting spacing right is what keeps your stagger and track width where you set them. Anodized aluminum resists the galling that turns a spacer into a seized part on the axle.
Teams typically carry a range of widths so track width can be adjusted without new hardware.
